Although Ben Hogan most likely will go down as one of the best golfers ever to play the game, his technique is not the best way to improve your golf.
Indeed, his golf method may be the worst way to improve your golf.
As you may know, Ben Hogan had a tendency to hook his ball during the early part of his career. As a result he experimented with various ways to overcome this tendency.
He finally discovered if he assumed a very weak grip and then cupped his wrists during his backswing he would be in perfect position to deliver a square clubface to his ball at impact and hit it straight and far.
There long has been a mystery about the Ben Hogan’s so-called “Secret.” Golfing gurus and pundits have pondered for years as to what was his “Secret.”
The truth be known, there never was a Ben Hogan “Secret.”
To the extent anyone could attribute some type of secret to Ben Hogan, it was nothing more than his assuming a very weak grip and cupping his wrists during his backswing.
However, just because this golf method worked for Ben Hogan it is not the best way to for you to learn how to hit the golf ball straight.
First of all, it is very difficult to assume as weak a grip as Ben Hogan formed on his club.
If you assume any grip stronger than Ben Hogan’s and then cup your wrists during your backswing, you would probably slice your golf shot instead of hitting straight golf shots.
Secondly, it is even more difficult to cup your wrists fully during your backswing. Had Ben Hogan only partially cupped his wrists during his backswing, he would not have been able to produce such sensational golf shots.
Another shortcoming of the Ben Hogan technique was that even though he was able to manipulate his clubface to a square alignment and an on line swing path by cupping his wrists during his backswing, he did not have a locked-in square clubface alignment and an on line swing path at the completion of his setup routine.
Unbeknown to most golfers, there is a way to cup your wrists during your setup routine to lock-in a square alignment and an on line swing path of the clubface.
