One of the most interesting golf swing tips is to appreciate that amateurs have better odds of hitting greens in regulation than professional golfers, theoretically.
The reason why this is one of the most interesting golf swing tips is that many amateurs believe professional golfers hit greens in regulation most of the time.
As a matter of fact, professional golfers only hit greens in regulation about two-thirds of the time.
One reason for only hitting greens in regulation about two-thirds of the time is that professional golfers play much longer courses in tournaments with many more hazards and rough than the average golfer.
They may be hitting a four iron into a green more than 230 yards away when the approach shot for a lot of amateurs on a local course is less than 150 yards.
Another challenge for professional golfers in their attempt to hit greens in regulation is they typically have more than 10 yards of distance separation between clubs; sometimes as much as 15 yards of separation distance between some clubs.
In comparison, the average amateur golfer has about eight yards of distance separation between clubs; sometimes much less.
For example, an amateur may hit one of three clubs in order to be on a green in regulation whereas a professional may be limited to a choice of two clubs.
If a Pro selects a nine iron instead of a wedge to hit to the middle of a green 135 yards away, the ball could fly more than 150 yards and perhaps wind up over the green.
On the other hand, an amateur might take an eight iron instead of a nine iron for such distance and wind up merely 20 to 25 feet past the hole but, nonetheless on the green.
When professional golfers say they are between clubs on a given hole, they really mean it.
When an amateur only has about eight yards of separation in distance between two clubs, it is difficult to believe he or she is “ between clubs.”
If professional golfers were allowed to take as many clubs as they desired with eight yards of distance separation between clubs, their tournament scores would plummet.
